Favorite Safety Gear
Here is a list of all my favorite safety gear to use when Freebording. I included links to product, a description of why I like them so much, along with the names of the items for future reference.
Atom Gear Adult Wrist Guards ($12)
I really like these wrist guards because they are comfortable and minimal. They are made pretty tough, and has a palm plate built in for road deflection. With moderate use I go through a pair a year. These things saved my palms at least 20 times over the years, possibly why I can still type right now lol.
Brentwood 2.0 Helmet ($90)
This is an EPS molded helmet. It saved me from certain death at least once. EPS really protects your brain, but it is only good for one cranial impact. I've broken 3 in 5 years. Im on my 4th one currently. I love the design, it looks good, and is very light. Comfortable and comes with a sun visor which you can swap out for regular padding (was also included with my newest one). Its easy to apply brand stickers and decals because of the flat surfaces.
Venum Kontact Gel Knee Pad ($30)
I just got a pair of these a year ago and I have no complaints. I love that they are discreet and comfortable. They are great to protect knees from side rash. I don't need a hard plastic front as I usually slide not hit my knees.
Ive always wanted the POC knee pads but they are $$$
@bob Those look legit. I'm kinda glad i went with the venoms though because for the price and how often I actually wear them (which is like never). I actually wear a knee brace/compression sleeve like this on my forward knee, because I've been doing flooring for 25 years and my knee is starting to pain me a little. Its very thin but provides compression and doubles as abrasion prevention (because I wear shorts mostly to freebord in). https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07JK4H7Q5/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1
For a helmet i can recomment Smith Maze with MIPS. Save Life!
Aw man, all you shorts wearing riders are CRAZY!!! A life of heavy basketball/jumping has my knees on tilt. Then came freebording and several nasty direct bashes to the (left) knee. No more shorts for me. Sweat pants provide a (false?) sense of security, but I'll take it. I wear my 888 knee pads 95% of the time now and wont go back. I think one more direct knee bash might cripple me.
I have a big heart shaped scar on the left knee from all those knee smashes, which came one ofter another on the exact same spot so that it feels like there is ground beef on top of my knee cap. (spend one year filled with fluid from bursitis) My daughter always asks "is that heart there because you love to freebord"? heh.
My favorite safety gear....was the time I drove across town to teach a friend to ride, but realized I had forgotten my helmet when I got there. I'm not the type to take that type of risk and would typically go home to get the helmet, but at the time I thought I had a reasonable solution. I keep a pretty robust pillow in my car...that I decided to stuff into the body of my hoodie, then tie the hoodie on my head with the sleeves as a chin strap and the pillow encasing my dome. You could say it worked. And looked great!
Yeah man I hear ya, I really should wear kneepads, and pants more. Im almost 39 and I've installed carpet, hardwood and tile since I was 15. You would think my knees would be wrecked, but they feel pretty great. I've also took many shots to the knee mostly while skateboarding since 12. when i fall freebording i take it all to the upperbody, and spread it out. Road rash just doesn't bother me at all, cuz I can block out pain really well. I cant find a set of knee pads that are comfortable enough to wear. Most knee pads make me feel very constricted, and as for shorts, well I weigh 200lbs and the pants they make these days are too tight.
